Située en plein centre de la France, l'ancienne province du Bourbonnais s'est constituée à partir d'un minuscule domaine, du Xème au XVème siècles, aux dépends des provinces voisines, notamment le Berry et l'Auvergne. Les Sires puis Ducs de Bourbon ont réussi à donner une identité forte à cette province hétéroclite, à tel point qu'aujourd'hui encore ses habitants se sentent toujours Bourbonnais.

Correspondant actuellement à peu près au département de l'Allier et à l'arrondissement de St-Amand-Montrond dans le Cher, le Bourbonnais est une province discrète et souvent méconnue. Elle fut pourtant au début du XVIème siècle le plus puissant état féodal de France, et les Ducs de Bourbon, bien des années après le rattachement de cette province au royaume, montèrent sur le trône et donnèrent huit rois à la France.

Located right in the centre of France, the former province of Bourbonnais had been formed from a tiny domain, between the 10th and 15th centuries, at the expense of nearby provinces, especially Berry and Auvergne. The Lords then Dukes of Bourbon managed to give such a strong identity to this heteroclite province that its inhabitants still feel Bourbonnais today.

Roughly corresponding to the current department (French territorial division) of Allier and the district of the town Saint-Amand-Montrond in the department of Cher, the Bourbonnais is a discreet and often neglected province. Though, it was the most powerful feudal state in France in the 16th century and many years after the province had been attached to the royal domain, the Dukes of Bourbon acceded to the throne and gave eight kings to France.

Nowadays, the Department of Allier has numerous difficulties, mainly due to its remoteness, far from any major roads (but the situation is improving). Its identity is more and more threatened by the Auvergne Region to which it has been unwillingly attached to in the 70’s. As for the territory of the North-West, it has been integrated to the Centre Region and is under influence of the Berry province. The Department of Allier has to find a way to assert itself, but the lack of a large metropolis and the decrease of its population prevent it from doing so. The genuine rivalry between the three towns, Moulins (administrative capital), Montluçon (industrial capital) and Vichy (touristic capital) doesn’t help.
